Are Dental Implants Painful?

Dental implant placement is not painful. Many compare it to the mild discomfort associated with less invasive procedures like tooth fillings. Implants are placed in the jawbone under local anesthesia. You may feel movement inside your mouth, but you’ll unlikely feel pain.

After placement, you may notice mild soreness and swelling when the anesthesia wears off. An over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen is sufficient to ease any discomfort.

About Dental Implants in Bloomington, IN

Dental implants are tooth root replacements, surgically placed into the jawbone. These roots integrate into the bone like natural tooth roots. After integration, your dentist tops your implant with an artificial tooth (dental crown). We can also place four to six implants per arch for implant-retained dentures.

Of course, we first have you meet with the dentist for a thorough oral health assessment. This appointment determines your candidacy for implants and whether you’ll need pretreatment work. For example, some patients require bone grafting to make implants a reality.

If you move forward with treatment, we schedule your implant placement.

Dental implants cannot develop tooth decay or infections, but it’s still crucial to maintain excellent oral hygiene and see your dentist every six months for checkups and dental cleanings. Preventable oral health problems like gum disease can lead to implant failure and additional tooth loss.

Studies have also found evidence that gum disease increases your risks for specific types of dementia, heart and lung issues, and even rheumatoid arthritis.

The team at Ellettsville Dental Center wants you to enjoy your new smile and maintain excellent oral health for life!
